About DRG Statistics

Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) are a patient classification system that categorizes hospital cases into groups expected to have similar resource use. They are used by Medicare and many other payers for hospital reimbursement.

Major Diagnostic Categories (MDCs) group DRGs by major body system or disease process. There are 25 MDCs plus Pre-MDC (00) for special cases like transplants and tracheostomies.

Data shown here is derived from CMS Medicare Inpatient Hospitals statistics, covering inpatient hospital stays for Medicare beneficiaries.
